Daughter’s Quest for father’s vintage passion

In a recent gathering reminiscent of a bygone era, vintage and classic cars took center stage in Udaipur, Rajasthan. Among the dignified lineup of automobiles, one stood out majestically—the 1937 Mercedes Benz 540K Cabriolet B. This timeless chariot, steeped in history and heritage, drew admiration not just for its exquisite design but also for the tradition upheld by its revered owner, the late Pranlal Bhogilal, of showcasing his prized possessions separately for enthusiasts to marvel at.

First unveiled at the esteemed 1936 Paris Motor Show, the Mercedes Benz 540K Cabriolet B quickly rose to prominence as a symbol of luxury and speed. Powered by a robust 5401cc engine and augmented with a supercharger, it commanded a formidable power output of 180bhp, effortlessly gliding at speeds of up to 170 km/h. Despite its storied past, the car encountered challenges over time, including alterations to its engine and gearbox.

The journey of the 540K took a fascinating turn when it fell into the hands of Yashwantrao Martandrao Mukne, the Maharaja of Jawhar, in 1938. Under his ownership, the car likely witnessed numerous royal events and prestigious gatherings, adding to its rich history. However, its true significance emerged when it was acquired by Late Pranlal Bhogilal in 1976. Known for his discerning taste and passion for vintage automobiles, Bhogilal recognized the inherent value of the 540K and ensured its preservation for future generations. Despite undergoing modifications over the years, including engine upgrades and alterations to its appearance, the essence of the car’s historical importance remained intact.

Late Pranlal Bhogilal’s fascination with vintage cars was deeply rooted in his upbringing and cultivated over a lifetime. From a young age, he developed a keen interest in automobiles, spending hours studying their design, engineering, and historical significance. This passion only grew stronger as he amassed an impressive collection of vintage vehicles, each carefully selected for its uniqueness and historical relevance. However, Bhogilal’s journey was tragically cut short with his unexpected passing in 2011, leaving behind not only a legacy of automotive excellence but also a collection in need of preservation and restoration.

Inheriting their father’s legacy and ardor, Brijesh Chinai and his wife Chamundeshwari Bhogilal Chinai embarked on a noble quest to revive the cherished collection. Among the treasures awaiting restoration, the Mercedes Benz 540K stood as a beacon of hope. As they meticulously toiled over each vehicle, a sense of nostalgia and reverence filled the air. Every car bore witness to a bygone era, embodying their late father’s dedication to preserving craftsmanship and elegance.

Their endeavor to restore the collection transcended mere mechanical tasks; it was a heartfelt homage to their father’s memory and a mission to safeguard India’s automotive heritage. With each lovingly restored car, they breathed new life into their father’s legacy, ensuring that his passion for vintage automobiles continued to inspire generations to come.

Through their unwavering dedication and profound love for vintage cars, Brijesh Chinai and Chamundeshwari Bhogilal Chinai not only honored their father’s legacy but also immortalized his spirit. As they continue their noble pursuit, they hope to share the stories and sentiments behind each vintage car, allowing the echoes of the past to reverberate through the corridors of time.
